 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

Ordering Food Delivery(叫外卖)

 by Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

ESL Podcast 373 – Ordering Food Delivery

Order clerk: Hello, Torino’s Restaurant.
1.
你好。Torino 餐厅。

Nancy: Hello, I’d like to place a delivery order.

2.

Order clerk: Can I have your address and the major cross streets, please?

3.

Nancy: It’s 1212 Main Street, and the nearest cross streets are Speedway and Highland.
4. 1212

Order clerk: Okay, it looks like you’re in our delivery area. What would you like to order?

5.

Nancy: I’d like an order of spaghetti. Does that come with any sides?

6.

Order clerk: You have a choice of soup or salad.

7.

Nancy: I’ll have the salad.
8.

Order clerk: Is that all? We have a $15 minimum for delivery orders.
9.

Nancy: In that case, I’ll also take an appetizer sampler plate.
10.
这样的话,再来份开胃菜sampler plate(不知谁知道sampler plate或者sampler platter如何翻译)

Order clerk: Okay, that’s one order of spaghetti and an appetizer sampler plate. You’re still $3 short. Would you like a drink or some dessert?
11.

Nancy: I’ll take an iced tea.
12.

Order clerk: All right, but you’re still a dollar short.
13.

Nancy: What can I get for a dollar?
14.

Order clerk: There’s nothing on the menu for a dollar, ma’am.
15.

Nancy: And you won’t deliver my $14 order?
16.

Order clerk: That’s our policy, ma’am.
17.

Nancy: All right, you win. Give me an order of bread. How long will that take?
18.

Order clerk: You should get your food in about an hour.
19.

Nancy: An hour?!?
20.

Order clerk: Yes, ma’am. You’ve ordered a lot of food and it takes time for us to prepare it.

ESL Podcast 484 – Getting a Performance Evaluation
Emil: Have a seat. As you know, we need to talk about your annual performance evaluation. Is there anything you’d like to say before we get started?

Comment: good translation! So I just made some minor modification.
More:
1说到请坐,如果是很正式的,会说please be seated, please take a seat也相对比较礼貌,比较随意的会说,sit, sit down grab chair,但是后者在语气变化后,会让人有咄咄逼人的下命令的感觉。

Sandra: Yes, there is. I’ve tried really hard this year to improve on some of the shortcomings identified in my evaluation last year.

Comment: good translation! So I just made some minor modification.
Identify

Emil: Hmm, I’m afraid that’s not reflected in this year’s evaluation. Your supervisor noted on the report that you’ve been performing below par for several months now, and your productivity is down, too.

Comment: good translation. But the translation of the 1st sentence is a bit improper. When you are saying没有被看到,you mean they ignores your efforts and achievements. It’s their fault. But Emil wants to say the evaluation doesn’t think so. According to the evaluation, his performance is still not satisfactory. Reflect means 反映 in Chinese, and to make it more natural, I translate it as恐怕今年的评估并没有认可你说的这些进步。

Basically, u did a great job.

Sandra: I can’t imagine why she would say that. If I haven’t excelled on the new project, I’ve at least pulled my weight. I don’t think she can fault me on that.

Comment: another piece of errorless translation. Keep up the great work. I just made some minor corrections to make it sound more Chinese.

More pull one’s share= do one’s share=

Emil: On the contrary, she thinks that you’ve been slacking off and not giving 100 percent.

Comment: you don’t translate “on the contrary” literally. Cuz in Chinese, no one would talk like that. It’s not oral Chinese.

More:
Give your 100%= try all out, try your utmost/best. Make every effort…

Sandra: I have had some personal issues, but I didn’t think they had been affecting my work. I guess I’ve let them bring down my performance.

Comment personal issues refer to family and relationship issues, which are not directly related with your work thing. But they are not 债券。

Bring down my performance=

Emil: This was a hard decision, but we’re putting you on probation for the next three months. You’ll have another evaluation at the end of that time. If your performance isn’t up to par by that time, we’ll have to think about letting you go.

Put some on a 3-monthin probationary period这样的用法还是挺实用的,可以好好记一下。
This is a hard decision=

More:
2up to是“达到。。。

Sandra: That won’t happen. I’m going to pull out all the stops to prove myself.

Comment: if you translate “that won’t happen”, it would be like”我不会让这种事情发生的”. Somehow we Chinese people would speak like that. But it doesn’t fit in here. You make it like “ 不会的”,but it’s still not very clear. So I translate it like that.

Emil: Good. That’s what I wanted to hear.
Comment: you translate perfectly. My version is just for you reference. Sometimes we got to make some major modifications to the sentence, so as to make the Chinese translation more idiomatic and natural.

By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

Could you direct me to the jewelry department, please?

但是我觉得另一说法:由escalade(用云梯攻城)和elevator(电梯)结合而成,听起来更靠谱。

Would you please page my son. His name is little V.

而你要是买了双high-heeled shoes,穿上去的头几天弄得自己脚很痛,说my shoes are killing me
或者my feet are killing me都可以。

S2E18(Part 1)

1.       I’m sorry for your loss.
本集Chuck去一家餐厅见Mr.Campbell。 Loss=the death of a person=Chuck刚刚在车祸中丧生的父亲。
而我们经常还会说这样的话It’s my loss. I’m sorry for you loss.

2.       Carten Bazen back in town.
Carten Bazen
My friend is coming to town.
Would you please take care of my dog. I will be out of town for a couple of days.

3.       Don’t cause a scene.
Cause a scene或make a scene=to bring unnecessary attention to yourself in public by expressing your anger or other intense emotions.
Julian. hey, I made the adjustment you suggested in the garden scene.
Julian。
Make an announcement, statement, amendment, improvement, commitment, arrangement, experiment, achievement。

4.       got into Yale early
=got accepted by Yale ahead of time/schedule.
=got the offer from Yale in advance.
They’ve rescinded your acceptance.
You will not be attending Yale.

5.       Every actress eventually finds the hook into her character, even if sometimes life has to give her a little push.

6.       I’m gonna take off.
I must get going.
I’m leaving.
I will be going.
I need to leave/go.
I gotta go.
Off to bed.
I’m heading/going home.
I must be off/go.
I have to go.
I gotta run.

7.       Let me just grab the check.
Ladies, don’t worry. It has been taken care of.
Check是支票,吃完饭对服务生说check, bring me the check, 和bill me, give me the bill.
而如果你饭后说let me take care of it 或者Let me get it.
我们说出去(随便)吃点东西,会说let’d go grab a bite.

8.       But I don’t think the movie is nearly as good as the book.
 Not nearly= a lot worse=差远了,和Not half as good as的意思一样。
sth is nothing compared with(和。。。比一无是处,比都没得比,连你一根手指头都比不上) ;
 not even close(还差得远呢,给你提鞋都不配) ,
no match for(不是对手).
Far from being(离。。。
Long way to go(还有很长的路要走)

说到给某人提鞋都不配,我不禁想起了一个短语can’t hold a candle to sb. 所以下次你要奚落一个人连给你提鞋都不配,就可以用can’t hold a candle to…

I once worked as a receptionist.
3occupations job
Its hard to get a sales managers job during the tough economic time.

2 what made you leave the estimable Kalamazoo Gazette?
Why did you quit your last/previous job? 当然你不大会回答自己工作不力,被炒鱿鱼,往往会说 cuz it has no room for growth. You know, Im that type of person whod like to take more responsibilities.

3) I think that would be a better fit for that.
Fit
Im the perfect fit for that position.

3Is it a little over the top?
Over the top=
Dont go over the top.
Cross the line,
Overstep the bounds

4) look after = take care of 照顾、照料。
Thank you for looking after Marley. Marley
How am I ever supposed to take care of a kid。。。
Something other than you she has to take care of
。。。

5)       now and again/then= occassionaly
7)       expect =waiting
expected you an hour ago.
我平时举的一个经典例句是:the general manager is expecting in the office. Can you fill out this form first?
8 pregnant
Doesn’t know she was pregnant.
John, I’m pregnant. John,
8)        pick up.
I was gonna pick you up anyway.
Would you please send a guy to pick me up (collect me) at the airport?

Honey. Pull over.
如果你要让出租车司机在哪里把你放下,可以说drop me off at the gate of yellow dragon stadium.

10) back in a flash= be right back=马上回来
I will be right back with you.

11) hours(=work hours)
You can pick you own hours
My new job has good hours( 指的是上班时间有规律,不用夜班,不用加班,工作时间比较少)
Don’t log on QQ during work hours.
12 raise =pay raise)
13) take…off
Maybe we can take some time off.
I will take two days off (work)我要休息两天。
请事假可以说take a casual/personal leave. 病假是sick leave. 年假是annual leave
不过当你说we gotta take off的时候,意思是“我们得走了”=we need to leave, we gotta get going.

14) freak out.
and you’d be doing me a really big favor if you didn’t freak out.
Get out of here right away. My mom would freak out when seeing you.

1. John: Where is your mother?
Victim:At work.
2. He made a big mistake at work.

下班后叫after work,
I feel like going for a drink after work.

You get straight home after school.

16) Safest neighborhood.

17) appliance 电器
18pricey=overpriced 太贵了

20 I think I have to quit my job

21 why should I???
Why should I give you a raise?
Why should I trust you?
Why should I keep sending you money?
Why should I help you out?

22) mortgage
Thank You For Smoking里面Nick的有一句台词叫:
Every man’s got his mortgage to pay.

23 adjust
Mom and dad. Don’t worry. We will soon get adjusted to the life in Hangzhou.

24 come up with
Sometimes life comes up with a better idea.
Come up with=think of=想出,通常和idea, solution, name, explanation等搭配

25 take
I cannot take this anymore.
你也可以用cannot put up with 来代替cannot take。 That does it.

26) think straight.
And I cannot even think straight.

27) exhausted.
I’m exhausted.
Exhausted=very very tired. But usually you don’t say you are “very exhausted”.

28) keep…down
Please keep your voice down.
当然,你也可以说would you please speak more quietly.
如果你想对方说话大声点,你可以这么make request please speak up a bit. Could you raise your voice. I can hardly hear you. Can you speak louder?

29Briefcase
30 Let me get this ( the phone)
应门叫get the door,当然说接电话还可以用take。记得Fight Club里面的Jack就对老板粗鲁地说了句“I need to take this”(我得接下电话),老板只能识趣地走开。 Thanks for getting back to me.=thanks for calling me back.

31) Great

32Sleep tight!
Sweet dreams. Tight在口语中有awesomecoolneat的意思,也就是说tight可以等于well,那么sleep tight也就=sleep well了。

33Regular
He is not a regular dogs.
I’m just a regular guy.
I’m not a normal girl(我是个异常/变态的女生)

34 Laundry not done.
Do the dishes and laundry.

35) We gotta catch up.

Catch up on some sleep(补眠)
36) walk
Lets go for a walk.
说散步还可以说take a walk,而远足的话,除了说go hiking, 还可以说成go on/take a long walk.

37) on the phone
John, your wife is on the phone
John,
说某人在打电话或者打电话过来找某人,用someone is on the phone.要是说挂掉电话,就说get off the phone.
My sister never knows when to get off the phone.

He’s not gonna make it through the night.
To be honest.
Let’s hope for the best.
I don’t want to make that decision on my own. By your own,.
He is just not getting better.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you. I’ve been meaning to give you a call.

Director(导演): David Frankel
Writers(编剧): Scott Frank, Don Roos
Cast(主演): Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston, Alan Arkin, Eric Dane
Plot(情节) : A family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and
neurotic dog. Based on the memoir by John Grogan.
Genre(类型): Comedy

A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water log stick will do just fine. A dog doesn’t care if you are rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he’ll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?

2) suppose that everyone of you have a dog now. and I think we can divide you guys into three categories:

A, Who keep dogs for meat.
B, Who keep dogs for security reasons. To guard the yard.
Ok. I think I got the idea now. You guys are bad. You people just want to take advantage of dogs. This is a movie about the love between a dog and the dog owners. You guys don’t belong here. Get out of here. The explains why you are still single. If you want to get a girlfriend, show your loves for dogs and kids in front of girls.

C, Who keep dogs as pets, treat them like family.

3)now seriously. Have you ever had a dog? Pls raise your hand.
4)What problems did you have with dogs. What do they do will drive you crazy?

6) Take look at the picture on the first page. This is the world’s worst dog Marley. Do you know what kind of dog Marley is?Labradorwhat adjectives would you use to describe him?
7) What’s the difference between raising a kid and keeping a dog?
8) have you ever eaten dog meat? What do you think of killing dogs for meat?
9do you think you are obliged to take care of the abortion expenses if your dog just knocked up your neighbor’s dog?
10) what would you do if you neighbor’s bog just bark all night. Your answer shows your personality.

1) Poison him,
2) Cook him, and enjoy it with friends.
3) Call the apartment manager.
4) Go talk with the neighbor to think of a solution. Or do you want to talk straight with the dog?
5) call the newspaper or TV station.
6) move to another neighborhood.

8) kill the neighbor, so the dog will starve to death.

10)play the music so loud that you deafen yourself, so you will never hear the dog barking.
11) install a soundproof windows on the wall of your house. Or your neighbor’s house.
12) wait until the dog dies. You know a dog only live less than 20 years. You can live much longer.
13) get the dog a girlfriend, so he will stop being so upset.
14) perhaps your neighbor is dead and his dog’s hungry, perhaps you should go feed him.
15) just put some cotton into your ears or stay in a hotel for the night. Probably the dog will not bark tomorrow.

1)       Friggin-
You are John Friggin Grogan.
John Grogan
. 比如un-freakin-believable, ri-fucking-diculous extra-fucking-ordinary. In-friggin-credible 有时候放在一句话的两个单词中间,比如are you out of your freakin mind?(=are you nuts?)
2 walk the plank

3) Eat heart out
4)  Double time
We gotta double-time it just a little here, honey.
You need to hurry up/hustle if you want to make the flight.

5 Ride shotgun.
You’d better ride shotgun.

6Tops
I’ve only left him for an hour. Tops.

当然此命令是你对男朋友下达的,而他又head over heels in love with you.
Marley, Heel.
Marley,
9)       Nada=nothing .

10)    Wannagonna的差别
You really wanna know?, wanna是个动词,意思是want to do something, or want something.所以wanna前面是不加Be动词的,而gonna相当于going to,要加be动词。

11 Jackpot
Hit the jackpot

12 Break the streak

13 Just so you know.
Oh, and just so you know, I am a dog person, but that’s not a dog.
Just so you know的意识是告诉你们,我跟你说,你们给我听着,语气上有不吐不快的气势,说话者往往带着某种情绪,说出一些不是很nice的话,想让对方难堪,或者让其他人难堪。 Just so you know. It’s not that common; it doesn’t happen to every guy; and it is a big deal.

14 Luck of the Irish=good luck

15 Good run
You have a good run though.

16 Party
I’m not gonna be a party to this.

17) makes the two of us

JohnYou gonna get rid of me when I misbehave?
Jenny: I’ve thought about it.
John: Well, that makes two of us.
That makes the two of us,的意思是“我也一样,我也会采取同样的措施” John在和Jenny争吵的时候说了这句话,属于气话。

18 Overwhelmed.
I just got overwhelmed.

19) whoops
Daddy says you are whoops.
I did it again. 而JennyJohn的第三个孩子,明显是个“意外”,因为他们之前已经说好no more kids for a while了。

20Come of it
I didn’t think anything would come of it.
A thing that comes of another thing is the outcome.

21with all due respect.
no offence.

22 just for the record.
Grogan. Just for the record. You surprised the hell out of me.
Grogan。
Just for the record是你接下来要说一些你希望对方记住的话的时候先说的一句话。 Verb+the hell/shit out of someone的说法:you scared the shit out of me=you scared me to death.

23Yeah. The football takes it out of him.
Take it out of someone =to get someone tired.

24If you are knocking off soon.
下班简单点说就是leave work, 而平时所说的打卡下班是clock off或者punch out离职,离开一家公司可以说成是leave the company. Keep someone in the company.

25 go ballistic = become extremely angry=
说一个人突然脾气发作还可以说go bananas/go berserk/bristle/blow your top/hit the roof/go crazy/go nuts/have a fit

26) make it
Can you make it upstairs?
I’m so sorry, but I can’t make it there tomorrow. I’ve got a lot of work dumped in my lap.

27 clearance puppy

We are both hanging by a thread.
There is no place like home
I will take my hat to you.
Cut him some slack
Door’s always open.
Teach football the right way. Learn it the hard way.
Gross
Flipped.
The vet seems to be on top of that.
Jen’s holding up.

(Getting Home Late from School)

ESL Podcast 189 – Getting Home Late from School
ESL Podcast 189 –

Dad: Where have you been? Do you know what time it is?

Caitlin: I’m sorry, Dad. I lost track of time.
Lost track of time=forget time, not get stuck on the road.

Dad: Lost track of time? We’ve been worried sick about you. You were supposed to come straight home after school.
Be worried sick=be extremely worried…

Caitlin: I know, but Janet was showing me something in her locker when a fight broke out in the hallway. The vice principal, Mr. Lopez, finally came out and broke it up.
Break it up=to stand in between the two people who are fighting and separate them.

Dad: That still doesn’t explain why you’re late. And, I don’t want any excuses.
That still doesn’t explain it= this is not a good reason= 。。

Caitlin: Well, one of the guys in the fight was Dan, Janet’s brother. Mr. Lopez called their parents and I waited with her until they got there.

Dad: I never liked Dan. He’s trouble. I don’t want you hanging around with him.

Caitlin: I don’t. I’m friends with Janet, not her brother. I didn’t do anything wrong.

Dad: Oh, really? You missed curfew last week and now you’re late again. Just wait until your mother hears about this. You’re grounded for a week.

Caitlin: Dad! That’s not fair! None of my friend’s parents are as strict as you are.

Dad: That’s enough. I won’t have you talking back to me. Now, go to your room.
Go to your room翻译成“给我。。。

My New Name Card

I’ve quitted my job and will focus on English tuition. As inspired by an interesting design, I designed the new name card on my own. A designer friend of mine helped to finish the graphic work. It looks pretty good.

Vincent’s Story
It was a rip-off

I went to Buynow to buy some office supplies this afternoon. Actually, I’ve been meaning to get an ink-jet printer and a recorder. The print store in the neighborhood is absolutely overpriced. 1 rmb each page is ridiculous. Plus, as I will leave my job by the end of March, I can’t use the company’s recorder anymore. I need to get one of my own. When I arrived there, my friend Jack was waiting there for me. The shopping mall was packed with people. We toured around the place for like 15 minutes before we got to the printer store. I chose an EPSON ink-jet printer at a price of 350. its not expensive, but the consumable-ink cartridge was a rip-off. Then we decided to get a modified one(改装的), which would save me a lot of money to be spent on the ink cartridge. Then I got a MP4 which could also work as a recorder and a KOSS earphone. It cost me an arm and a leg.

8.      ROLE PLAY
Ok. Let’s do a simply role play practice. Who wants to be a store clerk? You should try your best to talk your customer into buying your items. Who wants to be the customer? You should try your best to drive a hard bargain.

Kenji: Hello, my car was stolen and I want to report it.

Officer: Where was it when it was stolen?

Kenji: It was parked outside of my apartment building. I went outside this morning to drive to work, and it was gone.
What are you driving at?

Officer: Okay, you need to fill out this form. Put down the
make and model of the vehicle, the year, and the color. You’ll also need the license plate number. Do you know the vehicle’sVIN number?

Make and model and year of a car
License plate number

VIN number:

Kenji: No, I don’t.

Kenji: What do you think the chances are that I’ll recovermy car?

Officer: That’s hard to say. If it was stolen by some kids who wanted to take a joyride, they’ll abandon it afterwards and you may get it back in one piece. If it was taken by professional car thieves, that’s a different story. They usually strip the cars of their parts and sell them to chop shops. You may not want your car back after it’s been stripped.

In one piece
That’s a different story =that’s another story=
strip the cars of their parts:拆卸零件

Kenji: I’ll just have to wish for the best.
Officer: We’ll notify you if we have some news.
Kenji: Thanks. In the meantime, I’d better get used to hoofing it around town!
hoof it: go on foot 步行

Vincent’s story—fake market
On Sunday night,  A friend treated us to dinner. During the dinner, Jack said he wanted to go to the Wushan night market. The foreigners in hz call it fake market. Cuz there are a lot of fake items for sale in the market. We got to there on foot and it wasn’t much a long walk. The market was crammed with young people looking for stylish but fake bargains. I chose a fake leather boss wallet, but the owner gave us an asking price of 120. I thought it was a rip-off. So we kept shopping around. But I really need to get a new wallet. We stopped at another stall. That girl classmate of mine picked up the same boss wallet, and started bargaining with the seller. She finally got it for 30. I knew she tried her best to bargain down the price for me. If I had done it on my own, I would have got it for 50 yuan. You know I’m an awful bargainer. I hate playing such a bargaining game with anyone.

It was Saturday afternoon and I was shopping in the garment district in downtown L.A. If you want to find good deals on clothes, shoes, and accessories (earring, necklace, bracelet, belt, watch compare: knickknacks(小饰品,小玩意) ) , this is the place to come. To get the best deal, though, you have to be ready to bargain.

I walked by a stall and saw a purse (AME=handbag) I liked. The owner had just finished making a sale.

Lucy: Does this come in (have other colors) any other colors? ( do you carry Ipod Nanos?)

Man: Yeah, we have this one in white and blue. I also have this other style in green.

Lucy: How much is the blue one?

Man: It’s $32.

Lucy: $32? What about the green one?

Man: That’s $30.

Lucy: That seems a little high. Can you do better on the price?

Man: This is a designer bag and it’s good quality. It’s a bargain at that price.

Lucy: Is that your best offer?

Man: That’s the best I can do.

Lucy: Well, I don’t know. I think I’ll shop around.

Man: Okay, how about $28.

Lucy: That’s still more than I wanted to spend. What if I take the blue one and the green one?

Man: I’ll give you both of them for $55.

Lucy: That’s not much of a break on the price. How about $50 for both?

Man: You drive a hard bargain. The best I can do is $54. You won’t find it cheaper anywhere else.

Lucy: Why don’t we split the difference and make it $52?

Man: Okay, okay. You’ve got a deal.

One of the things I like to do on the weekends is go to garage sales. I’m a bargain hunter and collector, so garage sales are good places for me. I look in the newspapers or just follow homemade signs to find the sales in my neighborhood. Whether it’s because people are doing spring cleaning or getting ready to move, there are always plenty of sales in my area.

After going to a lot of garage sales, I’ve learned a few things about getting what I want at the price I want. Bargaining on price is par for the course at any garage sale. If you don’t want to get ripped off, you’ll try to get the sellers to lower their price. I’m an early bird and I usually get to the sales before other people to get the best items. But to get the best prices, be sure to go back right before the sale ends. Most people are desperate to sell so that they don’t have to store those things again or to lug them to a charity office to give them away. That’s when people are ready to slash their prices. It’s true that there is a lot of junk and knickknacks at garage sales. But one person’s trash is another person’s treasure!

By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

This determines whether thematerial will be taken into account in the next planning run or not

This determines whether thematerial will be taken into account in the next planning run or not

3)此处的whether… or not 用于表示是否,和whether是通用的。
Maurice asked me whether I needed any help. There were times when I wondered whether or not we would get there.
whether to do something
She was uncertain whether to stay or leave. I didn’t know whether to believe him or not .
The question arose as to whether this behaviour was unlawful.

。。的时候,就必须用whether or not,而不能用whether
比如:I’m quitting. Whether you like it or not.
This freakin buiding is burning. We’re getting out of here now!!!!! Whether you’ve found your baby or not.

 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

1)    unwind
I’m beat. We need to unwind. Let’s get a drink.

2)    mellow out
You need to mellow out a bit. Don’t get yourself so overworked.

3)    let your hair down
Vincent’s been feeling so stressed these months, but he can’t let his hair down until the end of March.

4)    Put your feet up
Vincent worked evenings preparing the next day’s presentation. His colleagues came over to his cubicle asking him to go get some late night snack:
“Hey, don’t be so committed, u need to put your feet up a bit. Let’s go get a bite”
“Who’s paying You said you would get it this time”
“Oh, boy. I forgot to bring my wallet in the morning”
“Look into my eyes and say that again”

5)    Chill out
When I’ve got a lot on my mind, I prefer to chill out a bit with a coffee with friends.
He chooses to chill out in his beach house.

6)    R&R
(=relax/rest and recreation)
Hey. I’m new here. Do you know where I can get some R&R after work?

7)loosen up
Vincent cracked up some sick and silly jokes in the class, to get his students loosen up a bit. It turned out that, it literally sicked a girl out.
8Kick back
I was working my ass off when my boss kicked back in the pub.
On the weekend, I can kick back and relax, but I dread going back to work when the weekend is over.

When I want to kick back and relax, I usually flip on the TV and see what’s on.

By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

A Traffic Jam

I was on my way to a restaurant to meet my date for dinner when I hit a traffic jam. I saw that the road was congested, but since I had to take the bridge to reach downtown, I had no choice but to stay on that road.
Good translation.

The traffic was bumper-to-bumper. One crazy driver even tried to drive on the shoulder to get around the backup. But as it turns out, there wasn’t any way to bypass it because the backup wasn’t due to an accident, a stalled car or some rubberneckers. It was because of road construction and only one lane was open.
Good translation.

2)turns out to be
3) road construction

After 25 minutes of stop-and-go traffic, I was at my wit’s end. My date was sitting at the restaurant waiting for me and I didn’t have her cell phone number. What’s more, I was really hungry.
Good translation.

1)at wit’s end
I’m starving/starve/famished”
3) 这里的“what’s more”相当于What’s worse was…

Finally, I got past the road construction and was on my way again. I drove a little recklessly, but I had to make up for lost time. I really liked this girl. The last thing I wanted was to make her think that I stood her up!

1) drive recklessly
2) the last thing I ….
The last thing I would do is hurt you. = you are the last person I would hurt=我绝对不会伤害你。The last thing I need is another pencil sharpener=我根本不需要卷笔刀,一个就够了。再比我之前举的一个例子,姑娘对追求者说you are the last person I would go out with。
3) stand someone up 或者cool one’s heel=break an date/appointment=爽约,放鸽子。

by Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

Dealing with Unhappy Employees

Asa: I don’t know how we got stuck with reviewing employee complaints. This has got to be the worst job ever!

1 Got stuck with something的意思是“陷于/困于某种不利或者苦难的境地而无法改变”,比如:got stuck with reporting over and over and over again to the headquarter(不得不一遍又一遍地向总部汇报情况)

如果你说got stuck in the traffic jam意思是“路上堵车,无法前进”

4Has got to be是“一定是,肯定是”

He is very unhappy with his present position。

Samantha: This is important work and somebody has to do it. Come on, let’s get started.

Let’s get started

Asa: I think it’s bad for morale to allow employees to file complaints. We’re all overworked and underpaid, and most of us are burned out.

Although the foods of that fancy restaurant is very expensive, I think it worth every penny.

I work my tail/ass off” ,如果是说成“像。。。一样工作“,则可以说:  work like a dog or horse or Trojan. Work very energetically and hard, as in She worked like a beaver to clean out all the closets, or I’ve been working like a dog weeding the garden, or He’s very strong and works like a horse”(以上摘自Answers.com.

4burnt out意思是“精疲力竭”=exhausted=very tired, 注意,口语中,你可以说说“I’m very very very tired”,但是比不可以说“I’m very exhausted”,因为exhausted就已经是 “very tired”了,再加了very就显得画蛇添足,且不和文法。 就像你可以说the parking lot is very very big (那个停车场好大好大的),但是你不会说The parking lot is very large。

Samantha: How else are disgruntled employees going to voice their grievances?

还有一个用法类似的词Vent,你可以说 Vent your anger 发泄怒火, 你如果想说把自己的气撒在别人身上,可以说:let it ( your anger, frustration) out on someone

Asa: Personally, I think it’s stupid for employees to put their complaints on paper. Aren’t they worried about retaliation from the management?

2)retaliation 的动词形式是retaliate retaliate against,

Samantha: I don’t think that’s going to happen. The whole point of having this system is to resolve any problems before they get blown out of proportion. It’s to everybody’s benefit to try to make this work.

1)The whole point of something 。。”

如果你问“what’s the point of working so hard” (这么拼命工作又有什么用呢?)
2) resolve problems/dispute

2)be blown out of proportion。。。

Asa: On the contrary, I think it makes for a dysfunctional workplace: Employees thinking of things to complain about and the management with their backs up against the wall. I just don’t get it.

1)dysfunctional workplace=the workplace will stop functioning(运转,进行)  意思是“工作无法正常开展/进行”

The management failed to think of a good solution.(管理层无法想出一个好的解决方案) The sales team couldn’t think of/come up with a good idea. The management thinks of me the most capable salesman.

3) with backs up against the wall,

Samantha: No, I guess you don’t. If you don’t like how things are done around here, I’ve got a suggestion

for you.

2around here=here

I3’ve got=I have,口语中很多时候用have/has got 来替代have,比如I’ve got a present for you.

Asa: What?

Samantha: File a complaint.

by Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

She is younger than I, but she has lost her rose

都i笃的竞猜题:as good as 该如何翻译

by Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

猜猜看(2.27)——as good as——猜中加分

They have as good as promised to help us.

as good as= almost, pratically.

比如,如果你说he as good as said i’m a bitch.
you as good as ruin his life.  Return his little bear cookies already. This used car is as good as new but at a far lower price.

如果你说your guess is as good as mine=我也不是很清楚呀。

如果你说someone is half as good as you,意思是他连你的一根寒毛都比不上(有这样的说法么)。

Jack Nicholson有一部片子叫 “As Good As It Gets",中文片名被翻译成“尽善尽美”。

this is too good to be true =哪有这种好事呀。

都i笃的竞猜题:从Music Greets the Ear说起

by Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

Music greets the ear。

I had an eargasm when listening to gorgasm’s gutting job我在听血腥高潮gutting job(这首歌)的时候达到了听觉高潮。

To become obsessed with a certain song for a period of time, listening to it on repeat for hours until you finally become annoyed with it.

I heard this new band on the radio today and song binged as soon as I got on the computer. After I downloaded it I listened to it 890240892389 times!

作用和当于你的朋友去go clubbing的时候,你说句have fun, 或者have a blast差不多。

greet the eye是某物映入眼帘”sth comes into one’s sight.

On all sides, verdant sunset-bathed hills greet the eye.

Jonnie Depp’s new flick is a huge hit.

Two and a Half Men里的Charlie(你可能更熟悉Friends里的Joey,不过我觉得后者不够娱乐性),或者放了屁就溜让剩下的人互相猜测到底是谁的干的好事,也指的是无良发贴者发了贴就不再参与讨论。

Unit 3  Could you do me a favor?

1. SNAPSHOT

There is a well-know proverb a friend in need is a friend indeed. What does that mean in Chinese? That means a friend who helps you when you need it is a true friend.

When it comes to doing a favor. Are you a “yes” person or “no” person. I mean Are you that kind of person who would always say “yes” to your friends when they ask for favors?

Will you go to your friend for help when you are in trouble? Or you perfer to solve all problems on your own?

Take a look at the white board. These are 8 favors people dislike being asked.

Samuel, can you read them out loud. Ok. Great. Thank you.

Yao, please explain to us their meanings in Chinese. Thank. You.

Ok. Among these 8 favors, which one do you hate being asked the most? Why? What would you say to your friend to turn down their request without hurting his/her feelings. Will you lie to them?

Now please put down 3 favors you hate being asked the most on your paper? Now, please take turns to tell us your answers.

Now let’s do a practice.

34. Society is based on rules and laws. It could not function if individuals were free to do whatever they want. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (08.10.11)

Sándor Petõfi once wrote: “Liberty, love! These two I need. For my love I will sacrifice life, for liberty I will sacrifice my love.” These lines were translated into Chinese and soon turned out to be very popular in China. Every one, to some extent, can identify with Petofi’s viewpoint of freedom. Some of them even rank it above other core values , such as equality, integrity, responsibility, which in some sense are at odds with freedom. Some liberalists even argue that human beings should be free to do whatever they want to guarantee an absolute personal freedom in the absence of rules and laws.  I think it’s a ridiculous idea which would lead to absolute chaos. The society will consequently stop functioning should such extreme liberalism prevails  in the society, and people would soon seek to restore order under laws.

We can picture a scene where no one obeys the traffic regulations on the road. Drivers jump the red light, pedestrians do the jaywalking, and cyclists take the liberty of riding on the driveway… What would be the consequences following such absolute freedom? Utter chaos it is. Cars getting hit in the door panels, motorists passing out under the impulsive force of air bags, wheels running over cyclists and pedestrians’ bodies, people’s limbs snapping off and flying through the showcases of the nearby boutiques, kids bursting into tears in the  lopsided prams…

such extreme liberalism will only lead to a temporary convenience or comfort, but comes at a tremendous cost.  No one would think of such freedom what they really want. Our society also functions like the public traffic system.  “Absolute freedom” is a like a beautiful snowflake. It starts melting and vanishes shortly after you hold it in hands. It’s just something drifting down from sky of imagination.  The minute you manage to ‘get’ it, you lose it. The freedom of the cyclist who rides on the drive lane  is deprived when the rear wheels of the car run over his chest and take his last breathe away. I think all of those who advocate ‘absolute freedom’ are selfish and stupid.

Charles W. Margold , author of the book ‘Sex Freedom and Social Control’ presents in his book that man and society are so intimately and reciprocally interrelated that nothing can be individual without, at the same time being social; nor social without, at the same time, being individual. Individual man makes up society; he contributes to society his individual traditions, and receives there from in return these same traditions socialized.  In this respect,  every one  shall feel obliged to sacrifice some unjustifiable ‘rights’ or ‘freedoms’ for the greater good, which is the precondition for their basic rights. All of us would live in pain and die in disgrace if the laws and rules of the society just collapse.

If a man is free to disseize your house and sleep with your wife without being punished by criminal law and morally denounced, your rights will be violated for nothing. There is also a huge possibility that you become so furious that you put a bullet in his head and burn the house to the ground.  Then you get back to the grocery store you work for with a broken heart, and sell alcohol to a 10-year-old boy, who got alcoholism 2 hours later and  die in the ambulance on the way to hospital as the driver just bails (he has the right to do that) on receiving a call from his girlfriend, who was just raped by a scumbag on the road. .. isn’t that terrible? No one benefits from such utter freedom in the long run. If our personal rights and freedoms extend to the point where we are harming others or impeding their rights by exercising them, the whole world is damned, and  the rights and freedoms of us will be gone. We would turn out to be a bunch of goners.

You can’t make omelets without breaking some eggs. Likewise, no freedom can be absolutely unrestrained. It always comes with obligations and responsibilities, which  are mostly specified by the laws and regulations. Obviously, we should seek to find a balance between personal freedom and social responsibilities, instead of acting like frenzied extremists.

看Gossip Girl学英语-S2E14(Part 1)

By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

1.I still don’t understand your sudden flip。
Flip在这里=suddern anger
He has a short fuse. =He has a quick temper. He is very peevish or He get peeved easily.
He is on a short fuse. Don’t talk to him. He is very upset these days.
而这里的flip 指的是由于生气、激动而失去控制(go mad, spin out of control).Akon有一首歌叫I’m Losing It,意思是I’m losing my temper/cool./mind

2.I guess it was the snowflake ball.
即使是绵羊,被逼急了也是咬人的( Jenny need to vent her anger or find an outlet for this frustration) 。所以,做人不要cross the line(挑战他们忍耐的极限,做得太过分)。

3. Has Queen Blair found another social ladder to climb?
我以前喜欢的一支Metalcore乐队就叫 “I Killed the Prom Queen”. Read more

 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

I decide to take over Bass Industries.
Take over=take control of

2 Siblings
比如:I’ve got 4 siblings.
Fratricidal
Patricidal

4. He said Yale could use a girl like Blair Wardolf.
它在这里的意思 和“I could really use your help”(我真的需要你的帮助)里的use(需要)差不多,相当于need。 I could use a shower now. 这里的use就是“want/need sth very much". I’m dying for a shower低一点。

3.I couldn’t sleep a wink.
not sleep a wink或not get a wink of sleep都是指整夜没法入睡。
I was up all night. I lay awake/sleepless all night. I couldn’t get to sleep last night.
如果说你自己由于工作、学习或者社会活动而可以不睡,可以说 I pulled an all-nighter(熬夜); I was burning the midnight oil(开夜车,焚膏继晷);I worked overnight(干通宵) to prepare the presentation.
I work around the clock,或者说 I work 24/7 to get the project back on schedule.
赶上进度是说get back on schedule;
进度落后是be hehind schedule; Read more

Slide–Fight Club is a Buddhist Movie

Like three years earlier, I worked my tail off to finish this dissertation. I didn’t post it here, cuz back then, i found it was really hard to accept its lameness(not surprisingly, lame in terms of wording and ideas) I know it well that this  piece of work is far far far froming being great. but nothing stays the same. all of a sudden, i think you guys deserve this piece of shit. dont bother finishing this. it will bore you.

“If you are reading this, then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this is useless fine print… is another second off your life. Don’t you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can’t think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all who claim it? Do you read everything you’re supposed to read? Do you think everything you’re supposed to think? Buy what you’re told you should want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping . Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you’re alive. If you don’t claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned.”

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding Read more

Vincent

 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

wow you’ve got 243 hits 搜索结果,当然你也可以说search engine results

narrow down the search criteria

live within a 50-mile radius.

Yesterday morning, I saw a post on 19lou:

Well, I’m not no English whiz or anything, but I do love to offer my opinions:

1.I’m not impressed.
2.So this is all you’ve got?

3.You are such a useless/hopeless piece of work/shit.
4. You are good for nothing
5. You are such a loser(
6. Don’t be such a coward

7.Pull yourself together!
8.Come on. You can do it better. (show me what’s you’ve got)
9. Straighten up a little

Leave the ‘zero’, go to the ‘hero".

So Etymologically Attracted to English Vocabulary Part 2 ( Inadvertently)

 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

Ask for More Than You Expect to Get”
What concerns
me is that when you’re involved in a negotiation, you are inadvertently creating
deadlocks, because you don’t have the courage to ask for more than you expect to get.

inadvertently
1678, lit. "inattentively," hence "unintentionally;" ult. from inadvertence (1568), from Scholastic L. inadvertentia, from in- "not" + advertentia, from L. advertere "to direct one’s attention to," lit. "to turn toward" (see advertise).

原来是advertise,是in- "not" + advertentia-"to direct one’s attention to," Read more
