by Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

Dealing with Unhappy Employees
Asa: I don’t know how we got stuck with reviewing employee complaints. This has got to be the worst job ever!
1) Got stuck with something的意思是“陷于/困于某种不利或者苦难的境地而无法改变”,比如:got stuck with reporting over and over and over again to the headquarter(不得不一遍又一遍地向总部汇报情况)
如果你说got stuck in the traffic jam意思是“路上堵车,无法前进”
4)Has got to be是“一定是,肯定是”
He is very unhappy with his present position。
Samantha: This is important work and somebody has to do it. Come on, let’s get started.
Let’s get started
Asa: I think it’s bad for morale to allow employees to file complaints. We’re all overworked and underpaid, and most of us are burned out.
well-translated, below is my version.
Although the foods of that fancy restaurant is very expensive, I think it worth every penny.
I work my tail/ass off” ,如果是说成“像。。。一样工作“,则可以说: “work like a dog or horse or Trojan”. Work very energetically and hard, as in She worked like a beaver to clean out all the closets, or I’ve been working like a dog weeding the garden, or He’s very strong and works like a horse”(以上摘自Answers.com).
4)burnt out意思是“精疲力竭”=exhausted=very tired, 注意,口语中,你可以说说“I’m very very very tired”,但是比不可以说“I’m very exhausted”,因为exhausted就已经是 “very tired”了,再加了very就显得画蛇添足,且不和文法。 就像你可以说the parking lot is very very big (那个停车场好大好大的),但是你不会说The parking lot is very large。
Samantha: How else are disgruntled employees going to voice their grievances?
还有一个用法类似的词Vent,你可以说 Vent your anger 发泄怒火, 你如果想说把自己的气撒在别人身上,可以说:let it ( your anger, frustration) out on someone
Asa: Personally, I think it’s stupid for employees to put their complaints on paper. Aren’t they worried about retaliation from the management?
2)retaliation 的动词形式是retaliate, retaliate against,
Samantha: I don’t think that’s going to happen. The whole point of having this system is to resolve any problems before they get blown out of proportion. It’s to everybody’s benefit to try to make this work.
1)The whole point of something 。。”
如果你问“what’s the point of working so hard” (这么拼命工作又有什么用呢?)
2) resolve problems/dispute
2)be blown out of proportion。。。
Asa: On the contrary, I think it makes for a dysfunctional workplace: Employees thinking of things to complain about and the management with their backs up against the wall. I just don’t get it.
1)dysfunctional workplace,=the workplace will stop functioning(运转,进行) 意思是“工作无法正常开展/进行”
The management failed to think of a good solution.(管理层无法想出一个好的解决方案) The sales team couldn’t think of/come up with a good idea. The management thinks of me the most capable salesman.
3) with backs up against the wall,
Samantha: No, I guess you don’t. If you don’t like how things are done around here, I’ve got a suggestion
for you.
2)around here=here
I3)’ve got=I have,口语中很多时候用have/has got 来替代have,比如I’ve got a present for you.
Asa: What?
Samantha: File a complaint.

There is a well-know proverb :a friend in need is a friend indeed. What does that mean in Chinese? That means a friend who helps you when you need it is a true friend.
When it comes to doing a favor. Are you a “yes” person or “no” person. I mean Are you that kind of person who would always say “yes” to your friends when they ask for favors?
Will you go to your friend for help when you are in trouble? Or you perfer to solve all problems on your own?
Take a look at the white board. These are 8 favors people dislike being asked.
Samuel, can you read them out loud. Ok. Great. Thank you.
Ok. Among these 8 favors, which one do you hate being asked the most? Why? What would you say to your friend to turn down their request without hurting his/her feelings. Will you lie to them?
