 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

She’s got a nice ass.

nice trunk or good assets. her ass is shapelyshapely means full and appealing

By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

how to say it in English?

you can’t drink.

Is this all you’ve got?

you suck big time.

My granny can drink you under the table.

you are pathetic.

you shouldn’t have pushed yourself so hard. (

You just don‘
t know you limit, do you?

Nobody was pointing a gun at you.

You are a joke.

Now you know what it takes.

Who
s the daddy now?

Give yourself a break.

You just dont know when to slam on the brake.

 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

1)    unwind
I’m beat. We need to unwind. Let’s get a drink.

2)    mellow out
You need to mellow out a bit. Don’t get yourself so overworked.

3)    let your hair down
Vincent’s been feeling so stressed these months, but he can’t let his hair down until the end of March.

4)    Put your feet up
Vincent worked evenings preparing the next day’s presentation. His colleagues came over to his cubicle asking him to go get some late night snack:
“Hey, don’t be so committed, u need to put your feet up a bit. Let’s go get a bite”
“Who’s paying You said you would get it this time”
“Oh, boy. I forgot to bring my wallet in the morning”
“Look into my eyes and say that again”

5)    Chill out
When I’ve got a lot on my mind, I prefer to chill out a bit with a coffee with friends.
He chooses to chill out in his beach house.

6)    R&R
(=relax/rest and recreation)
Hey. I’m new here. Do you know where I can get some R&R after work?

7)loosen up
Vincent cracked up some sick and silly jokes in the class, to get his students loosen up a bit. It turned out that, it literally sicked a girl out.
8Kick back
I was working my ass off when my boss kicked back in the pub.
On the weekend, I can kick back and relax, but I dread going back to work when the weekend is over.

When I want to kick back and relax, I usually flip on the TV and see what’s on.

 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

I decide to take over Bass Industries.
Take over=take control of

2 Siblings
比如:I’ve got 4 siblings.
Fratricidal
Patricidal

4. He said Yale could use a girl like Blair Wardolf.
它在这里的意思 和“I could really use your help”(我真的需要你的帮助)里的use(需要)差不多,相当于need。 I could use a shower now. 这里的use就是“want/need sth very much". I’m dying for a shower低一点。

3.I couldn’t sleep a wink.
not sleep a wink或not get a wink of sleep都是指整夜没法入睡。
I was up all night. I lay awake/sleepless all night. I couldn’t get to sleep last night.
如果说你自己由于工作、学习或者社会活动而可以不睡,可以说 I pulled an all-nighter(熬夜); I was burning the midnight oil(开夜车,焚膏继晷);I worked overnight(干通宵) to prepare the presentation.
I work around the clock,或者说 I work 24/7 to get the project back on schedule.
赶上进度是说get back on schedule;
进度落后是be hehind schedule; Read more

(S2E8-Part 1)

 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

Gossip Girl

1.If the electricity goes out…
停电还可以说have a power cut/outage, have a blackout

2.Eleanor put me in charge and it’s really big deal.
Eleanor

big deal在这里=very important.

So what? What does it matter?
A:Hurry up. We are late for school!
B:Big Deal!
So you just made a minor error. NBD. ( no big deal).
你还可以说no biggie, no big whoop. don’t worry, no worries, take it easy.
你让别人不要大惊小怪,小题大做,可以说don’t make such a big deal ( a meal; a drama; a fuss) out of it
So I dated your little sister. Like it’s such a big deal!
买一送一(buy one and get one free).

3.I’d love to give you a ride.

4.I’m so glad they sent you.

5.That guy is totally into you.
be into someone意思是=like someone much=喜欢,为某人着迷,对某人很有感觉,对某人有意思。
totally=absolutely=obviously ,表示一个很深的程度。
be crazy about someone
be attracted to someone
love someone head over heels 等等。

6.He thinks of me a little sister.
think of在这里的意思相当于regard/take。。。as.
其他很多时候=come up with

7.  The other night
We went to movies the other night

8.I’m just been so on edge.

9. I went over it a hundred times.
Go over =examine closely = go through. 。。

10. Caterer thought he was hitting on him.
hit on someone的意思是:和某人调情,勾引某人,想泡某人 =to flirt with someone, to make a pass at someone, to make a move on someone. Agnes is making goo-goo eyes at me.

1.Rufus: What Brings You Down Here, Lily?
Rufus:

Lily:Oh, I Just Thought It Would Be Nice To, Um, To Say Hello, Maybe  Catch Up.
Lily:

Rufus: Actually I Was On My Way Out.
Rufus:

Lily: Of Course. I Should Have Called First. You’re Busy With Work And–

Rufus: No, I Just…"Repo Man" Is  playing At The Sunshine. You Know How I Love My Harry Dean Stanton.

Lily: Playing Hooky?
Lily:

Rufus: Yeah, Don’t Tell Anyone.
Rufus:

1)What Brings You Down Here

2) Catch up
Catch up with sb的意思是“和某个有段时间没见面的熟人见面,看看最近他们都做了些什么”,差不多就是”聊聊天,叙叙旧”,我们可以体会一下,catch的原意是”追赶“,这里由于你们很久没见,对于对方发生什么事情你很久没了解了,这个时候为了keep posted,你就要“迎头赶上”去获取对方的消息。 I’ll catch up with you later 或者I will catch you later,用来替代I will see/talk to you later,

Catch up on the news/gossip
而我们平时所说的 “补觉”则是“catch up on sleep”,在特定语境下,你只要说 “just go get some sleep”或者 “get some Z’s”,也差不多。

3)  I Should Have Called First.
1.I should have killed that scumbag in the first place. ( now he comes back to compromise my plan)
2.You shouldn’t have disclose our company’s secret to her last time. Now rumors spreads all over the China branch.
3.I should have known she only cared about my money (obviously you are devastated and regret for not knowing that earlier).

4) Play Hooky?

Play hooky(BrE Play truant)是翘课,逃课,旷工(翘班),不参加一些会议,活动等意思。 I played hook today and did not go to work.

事实上,Play hook 还有“爽约”(to not keen an appointment)的意思..例句:I don’ t want to see her today, cuz I look like shit today. So I think I will just play hooky.
I don’t have time for the sales meeting  today,  so I think I’ll just play hooky.

如果是请病假,还可以说take a sick leave, 请事假可是说take a casual leave 或者take a compassionate leave, 如果是准假则是“be given a leave of absence”.

什么叫hard to get 呢。

从词源上分析,俚语中,hook有depart hastily的意思(匆匆离开,),比如we’d better for home.
俚语中有 “hook it”则有“to run away, depart, flee”的意思, 这个hook it也就等于play hook。 例句:He hooked it when he saw the truant officer.(查课员,通常来自可怕的教导处)

We will late for school. Stop dawdling!

2. She will be joining us of for lunch.
这里之所以用will be joining, 而不是will join,是因为have lunch 是一个持续进行的过程。
而如果你说“我会杀了你的”,你只要说“I will kill you”,而不会说 “I will be killing me”,除非你可以翻来覆去不断杀死他。

比如:“This is fvcking brutal shit. ‘Gorgasm’ kills!”
Windir owns/rules/kicks major ass/is badass/
This album is a killer.  或者Check this shit out. This is definitely the killer track of the album.
www.englishvincent.com owns my ass…

These new shoes are killing me. I cannot take it anymore. The translation of “steelwork plan” is killing me.

问别人中饭想吃什么可以说“what do you want to have for lunch”. 而如果你要说“他们吃中饭的时候达成口头协议”一般是说“The reached on a verbal agreement over lunch”,会比说“…when having lunch”要好。

Join sb for sth是一个固定用法,一个可以让你少用have sth with sb的用法。 比如I invite him to join us for a few drinks. Care to join us? I can buy you a beer. Is unavailable ,would you care to leave a message? (would you) care to do something,是非常有礼貌地邀请,建议别人做某件事的时候用的。 当然如果有人打电话找你老板,而他正在带客户参观新建厂房,你也可以说he is not in the office或者he is busy now. 但是通常你并没有义务告诉人家你老板到底在哪里,一面不经意间泄露商业机密(let them into your company’s secret by taking advantage of your stupidity) ,而给竞争对手有可乘之机。

(S2E4-Part 1)

 By Vincent from www.englishvincent.com

Gossip Girl

1.Wakey, wakey! Upper east siders!

1Wakey-wakey!

I wonder what some  of  those  campus  queens  look  like when they get up in the morning.Upper

Mom, wake me up at 7:00. I don’t want to be late for work.

2.Every time we’d go for a walk…

补充 a. Perhaps I can walk you home

     b. Walk the dog是遛狗(go for a walk with you doggie

这种穿衣方式叫做:dressed up like a dog’s dinner. This article is a dog’s breakfast.

3. So let’s keep this between us.

或者可以说keep this between ourselves.

Can I confide in you

大人叫小孩别乱动的时候会说keep your hands to yourself.

4.We will be in touch.

这句话出自Queen B 很多时候,你要学会体会言外之意(read between the lines. Marjorie really has green fingers; look at those flowers!

5. Amanda. I just transferred in.  Amanda,

I want to be transferred to the head office. Neither player wants a transfer.

I’m Dan. I…I just assaulted you. 我叫Dan。我。。。 。。

6. Break-ups are easy. It’s having to see them date someone else that’s hard. Why do you think I rub it in Chuck’s face every chance I get.

Rub someone’s nose in it/ in the dirt是什么意思呢? 这里blair 永成了rub it in Chuck’s face,并不影响理解。

So I made a mis-take! I wish you’d stop rubbing my nose in it.

Rubbing my nose in it is not going to correct the mistake.

Why do you always have to ick holes in everything I say?

中文所说的在某人的眼皮底下干什么勾当在英语中是:do something right under someone’s nose.

1.X.O.X.O gossip girl

X.O.X.O是什么意思呢?

Even as little as a hundred and fifty years ago, not many people could read or write. The "X" at the bottom of a document took the place of a signature. They would kiss the "X" as a crucifix or bible was kissed to emphasize the importance of the mark. It was this practice that lead to the "X" representing a kiss.

There isn’t much known about the beginnings of the "O". It is a North American custom. The "O" represents the arms in a circle around another person. Arms crossed in front of you do not mean the "X" as a hug! The "O" is the hug.

2. A few simple tips to beat the heat.

Beat the traffic/rush

他中暑了,可以说He suffers from  heatstroke.

3.Try these on.

These Jeans fit you like a glove.

量身定做,非常合适=tailor-made or customer-made

后面Blair的妈妈说了句“it’s hot and late. We will finish your fitting tomorrow”.

4. I knew it 我就知道(会这样)

5.I ran into Jenny out on the street. Jenny

Ran into=偶然遇见,不期而遇,类似的说法还有come across, bump into, see, formal点的说法是encounter

如果是事先约好的,那你就要schedule an appointment, fix a date了。

Nate is running late=nate’s gonna be late. 如果说时间要用光了: time is running out(muse一首歌的歌名,很好听),如果说车的汽油快用光了:gas is running out, 如果说电池快没电了: battery is running low 电池没电了是battery is dead,而后面Jenny 说她的手机没电了:My phone died. 如果是竞选总统:run for presidency, 管理一家公司: run a company, 叫人拼命跑,赶紧逃命:run for your deal life.

6. Dan’s Father: You two have worked out all your issues?

Dan: yeah, Got’em all squared away

Square away=finish

7. I sent my money to my financial guides. It’s tied up in bonds for six months?

8. Saved by the bell.

这是一个idiom 意思是:rescued from a difficult or  dangerous  situation  just  in  time  by something that brings the situation to a sudden end. (From the sounding of a bell marking the end of a round in a boxing match.)

当时Serena正在步步紧逼,质问Dan,非让他说出原因来,这时候Serena的电话响了,Dan觉得如释重负(what a load off.

9. Hmm, Look, I’m sorry.

这里的look=listen。

10. You two have rekindled your love in secret.

Rekindle your love=

11.An affair with my boyfriend’s mother?

Have an affair with someone

13. I don’t have a romantic bone in my body.

14. Water always finds it own level.

15. She and Blair are fast friends.

如果说两个人一见面就很投缘,可以说they just hit if off 或者they totally clicked.

16. I just receive a message from Nate. Family drama, do not want to burden me. Same old story.

其实Venessa这里想说same old shit的,哈哈。

这种人往往会: blow things out of proportion(记得JokerThe Dark Knight里面用这个表达方式说了句有趣的双关:I don’t want to blow this out of proportion. 他这里的blow还有blow up(炸掉)的意思,当时他全身捆满了****);或者make a drama/fuss out of something.

"Oh my god! You copied that without giving the other person credit! That is just mean. You’re horrible, don’t talk to me. Im gonna go tell everyone what a cruel person you are just so they will pay attention to me and think im cool."

17. You still positive that you don’t want me to tag along.

You want me to tag along, right?

Why my mom always tags along with me

I can bring a date.

18. The cool exterior. The fire below.

19. Not’s that it’s any of your business, but Marcus and I have an amazing sex life.

Not’s that =although

比如: not’s that I want to kill her. It’s just, I don’t want her to be alive anymore…

20. Stay calm.I’m sure the power will be back on in a second.

21. I didn’t sign up for some creepy love triangle.

Sigh up for something

22. HonestlyCatherine so what?

oh, honestly, Agrippine! Use the stairs!"

Did you really not know it was him? Can you honestly tell me that”里的honestly 则是说实话,老老实实跟我说的意思。

23. It’s not like I can fire you twice.

It’s not likeusage

1 . …and he cans me

Can someone=give sack to/sack someone/dismiss someone.

Pink slip: a piece of paper giving notice of dismissal from employment; any dismissal from employment.

I got a pink slip today. I guess I had it coming.

I hope I don’t get a pink slip. I’ve got my mortgage to pay.

Pink slip can also be used as a verb.

If you make no headway at work, I’m going to have to pink slip you.

2be dismissed - to be fired

24. I don’t really feel like talking

Feel like=want to

25. I cannot believe that Nate Archibald is a gigolo.

26. I don’t really have a choice.

I don’t’ have an option.

Expressions that are identified as slang are often some type of entertaining wordplay, and they are almost always an alternative way of saying something.

还要tons of attention.

3.play squash

4. …which is why I need you to keep you chin up and trust that your mother’s got this handled.

(keep your) chin up在口语中,是在让不要灰心气馁,要振作,要有信心。

1) The bad news was a real shock, and John took it on the chin.

      2) The worst luck comes my way, and I always end up taking it on the chin.

5. Not that this makes her an any less forceful presence in my life.

6. Hey, if you need to work out the details of your takedown

7.What are you up to right now.

忘记里词句在剧中的具体语境,总之what are you up to lately/these days  可以用来问候对方最近忙些什么,干些什么。

8. They’re obviously just trying to scare us to get us to rat out my dad.

9. He is outside of my regular circle.

10. Ok, fine. I won’t bring it up again.

11. A well-preserved 38.

12.We know Chuck had a thing for elder women.

Have a thing for就是没来由的喜欢某样东西。

13. Maybe he is her plus-one

14. But I assure you, there is an explanation for all of it.

Save your breath, Blair.

Save your breath.

There  is  no sense in trying to convince her. Save your breath.

Tell her to save her breath. He won’t listen to her.

15. This party is a complete bust

I hate to bust up the party, but we gotta go.

Vincent’s party was simply ace.

16. Go commando

Earliest uses

Slate’s Daniel Engber dates the modern usage to 1974 college campuses, where it was perhaps an outgrowth of the Vietnam War.[5]

The origins of the phrase are uncertain, with some speculating that it may refer to being "out in the open" or "ready for action." According to Engber many soldiers do go without underwear to "increase ventilation and reduce moisture." The earliest known use of the term in print is January 22, 1985 when Jim Spencer wrote in the Chicago Tribune:

"Furthermore, colored briefs are ’sleazy’ and going without underwear (’going commando’, as they say on campus) is simply gross".

The expression could also be derived from the term "go regimental" to describe a True Scotsman wearing no underwear beneath his kilt

If a person is ‘going commando’, they are not wearing any underwear.

It is called ‘going commando’ because of an old practice in the army, where, so you didn’t shit your underwear in battle, you didn’t wear any - and therefore could boast that you didn’t shit your pants.

Also a known cure for vpl.

"I’m gonna wear those really tight shorts and go commando to show off my bulge."

1. Oh, I Know! He swept me off my feet!
Sweep someone off his/her feet
Mary is madly in love with bill. He swept her off her feet.

2.My husband just pulled up.

3. I only hooked up with him a week ago.
Hook up with someone
******叫one night hook-up.

4.Easy pickings
Pickings

5. Stag
Go stag

For security purposes, I’m going to
have to ask you to check in your mobile.

7. There you go.
我们在很多场合多次There you go。

8. It had very strict dress code.

9. If you didn’t stand me up in the airport in the first place.
Leave someone hanging

In the first place是一个很好的词组,意思是一开始,起先,先前,当初。 In the first place很多时候都用在抱怨的语气里,有点早至如今,何必当初的感觉。
比如Why didn’t you tell me about it in the first place?
You shouldn’t have cheated on me in the first place.

10. spotted in a massive display of P.D.A.
Public Display of Affection.
记得我当初还介绍过一个“No Display of Affection in Public” (不准在公共场合亲热)
Spoted

11. You said we were through.
We are so over. We are history. 或者I’m so over you. You are history.

12. So I, I , went a little overboard.
Go overboard

Horton Hears A WHO 里的几句英语

 By Vincent

This is the second time I watch this movie, a spring animation blockbuster adapted from Dr.Seuss’s Horton Hear’s A Who. Too bad I failed to find a proper English subtitle for this AVI file, as it was ripped and uploaded by AXXO a couple of days ago. Obviously, it’s impressive where the previous DR.Seuss’s adaptaion " The Cat In The Hat" has fallen short.

Anyway, I recommend everybody watch this funny anime.

1.Certainly appreciately your input

Ok, I will that under advisement.

She scared the shit out of him.

 2. Hey, Jojo, What’s shaking. what’s happening. What’s the world.

Jojo。
=what’s up?
=what have you been up to.
=what’s new

 3. No matter how tight this speck I get. The speck will never replace you.

4. Proceed this plan.

We are all very busy….Let’s bring this meeting to order.
以前学过的是call this meeting to order。

  5.You cross the line.

6.I can’t figth this feeling anymore.

My Name Is Earl

By Vincent

We’re not cut from the same cloth

Turd
造句:You nasty piece of turd.

We’re gonna eat in a while 我们待会儿就开动。

Cross her off the list

But we just clicked 和下面的hit it off差不多
I Hit it off with her=I fell in love with her at first sight(the second I laid my eyes on her)

比较:I don’t know what makes him tick
Relieve yoursel=take a leak

My ex is very clingy.

She treats me like doormat. Don’t be such a doormat!

Stand up for herself

You need to lighten up = 不要这么认真啦,你这是何苦呢,看开点啦。

Speak For Yourself

By Vincent

If you say “speak for yourself” when someone has said something, you mean that what they have said is only their opinion or applies only to them.(INFORMAL)

1.“We’re not blaming you,‘ Kate said.
“Speak for yourself
” Boris muttered

2. “MarkWe all think Vincent is a major badass, and we are planning to crucify him tomorrow morning”
“Speak for yourself
Chuck”

“We were all bored in that lecture.” “Speak for yourself
I like it”

South Park

By Vincent

1.I’m getting on first!
Oh, no! You’re not!

A:I will go to the movies with Bob!
B:No, you don’t.

2.The internet isn’t working!

3.Whoa!Settle down. Dude.
Whoa!

Whoa! You are speaking fast!

4.We’re full up.

The hotel is booked up或者the hotel is filled to capacity.

Numberous of people cramm/pack into Grandmather’s home(我随便翻翻)

Cram into, pack into 和flock into的差别或许你们可以尝试着自己去查查字典,或许会更有体会。

The factory is working at full capacity.

5.So they have to ration it out carefully.

His wife rations him to 10 cigarettes a day.

Read more

Why So Pissed Off

By Vincent

As usual, Young gave me a ride home in the unbelievably ’drivable‘ company car Jetta late tonight.

Last night, he called, asking me ‘what means ’pissed off”. FYI, he should’ve asked "what does ’pissed off’ mean".

Anyway, I told him that if you say ‘i’m pissed off’ , u mean you are very annoyed, irritated, and if you ask a person to ’piss off’, it’s like ”bugger off’, ‘fuck off’, ’ get lost’, stuf like that.   Well, Young has been such a curious kido all along. With his hands holding the wheel, he looked at me, asking" as piss means ‘niao niao’, why ‘pissed off’ means 我火大了?

‘ uh…I don’t know, perhaps it’s because your are most likely to get irritated if I piss on you. This is the reason I can think of now’, answered  Vincent.

Obviously, this guy was not convinced. I just could tell from his face.

He gets a kick out of my failure to answer his questions. He kept asking me and in the meantime, ran his imagionation wild, in an effort to figure that out.

‘Well, why dont you just visit my blog tomorrow. I will put it there later’.

I was rather pissed to find that there is not much evidence out there to substantiate or dismiss your excellent guess. We can be sure that the angry meaning of pissed off became popular among the Armed Forces in World War II, and entered into mainstream use during the post-war years. In 1946 it was defined as a new word in American Speech XXI: "This means roughly, fed-up, irritated, depressed." Some linguists and historians think the expression must have been well known during the war years, citing a story about General Eisenhower’s dog. The story goes that the dog (Felix) urinated on a map and the officers joked that the enemy was "pissed off." (Leonard Mosely, Marshall, 1982).

In the 1970s, pissed off became much more common in British English, and continued to gain popularity in the U.S. As its usefulness grew, several new variants of the expression sprouted. For the first time we find pissed (no "off"): "I’m pissed at people in the movement . . ." (It 9-23, 1971). This reduction of pissed off to pissed is primarily American; in British English pissed continues to be an adjective for drunkenness. During Read more
