Peace Warrior–Another Buddhist Movie Following Fight Club

By Vincent

(Note: This article was written like a half year ago when I was totally smashed after finishing a few beers.   As you can imagine, back then, I had a sudden flash of inspiration as I watched the movie in my place late at night.   I didn’t pay much attention to the wording and grammar, so as not to break the track of my thought.  Please try to focus on my thinking and the way I put it, instead of getting a sick thrill out of your marvelous findings of some minor grammartical errors or typos you are most likely to find in this ‘drunk talk’ like an annoying bitch. Plus, to get a better understanding of my ideas, you’d better see the movie ‘Peace Warrior’ and ‘Fight Club’ first. Anyway, enjoy your journey with the zen master wannabe Vincent to the land of Nirvana.

I was expecting something good as the sliding bar of my of my video player goes rightward, then I just got a feeling that something exceptional was going on there. The first thing that arouses my interest that the guy Scott Mechlowicz, who plays Dan Millman looks a lot like Brad Pitt! Can you fuckin believe that? 80% alike if not a mirror image of Brad. Suppose he was a blond like Brad Pitt, don’t you tell me he won’t get you the feeling that it’s Brad Pitt’s early movie when you first lay your eyes on him. He even talks and act like Brad Pitt. I mean, look at the way he looks at people. That’s something amazing, coz you know Brad is getting old, but we always need some cool guy to get our adrenalin going and inspired.

Enough about his look and demeanor. Let’s get back to the movie.

Socrates, played by one of my favourite actors, Nick Nolte, is an old man works in the gas station. Dan will go to him for inspiration everytime he is obsessed with confusion and depression. One time, when Dan is wolfing down rookies or something, he says:” Slow down! You might taste something!” From that very beginning
I start to get the feeling that is movie is sorta of related to Fight Club, cos there begins to have a really slight suggestion of Zen wisdom in his words. What he later says make this feeling even stronger: If I was training you, No meat… No TV, No alcohol, No drugs, No Sex, which define the life of MONK! That’s really getting interesting. First, a Brad Pitt alike Scott Mechlowics, then a Zen-master Socrates. It real starts to make me link this movie to Fight Club, a finest Buddhist movie in my opinion. If you got that enormous patience and courage, you can take a look at my dissertation on analyzing Fight Club as a Buddhist movie by click following link.

In the same scene, Socrates continues after Dan fails to “stand his Mabu(站马步)” on the table for more than five minutes and falls off the table: ”Everyone tells you want to do, what’s good for you. They don’t want you to find your own answers. They want you to believe theirs…I want you to stop from gathering information from outside y Read more

By Vincent

This impasse made coping with the deficit and the recession doubly difficult, because it meant the administration was always looking for quid pro quo from the Fed.

1851, from Fr. impasse "impassable road, blind alley, impasse," from in- "not" + M.Fr. passe "a passing," from passer "to pass." Supposedly coined by Voltaire as a euphemism for cul de sac.

Impasse: a situation in which it is impossible to continue with a discussion or plan because the people involved cannot agree

The political process is at an impasse.
Negotiations seemed to have reached an impasse .

Deadlock: a situation in which a disagreement cannot be settled

The talks have reached a complete deadlock .a last-ditch effort to break the deadlock Negotiations ended in deadlock.

那么cul-de-sac就是指the bottom of the sack,众所周知,袋子只有一端有开口,而其bottom是封死的。

最人人喊打的行为:change lane at will

你可以说come to a dead end 也可以说reach/hit a dead end.

一个dead-end job就是指没有发展的工作 a job with no room for growth or a job without a chance of progress(发展)

法语中,le cul=sex, film de cul= porn=dirty movie=skin flick。。。

“be on the horns of a dilemma” 的意思是 “to be in a situation in which you have to choose between two unpleasant or difficult situations”, 也就是进退维谷,左右为难的意思.

有一个可能大家都知道的同义词dilemma(我是大一的时候听NellyKelly在格莱美上唱这首歌的时候了解到,没想到我后来会开始听金属) Dilemma是说你处在这样一个境地:所有的选择或者offer都是一样的好或者一样的坏,让你无从做出抉择,不知道该不该接受。

It’s a catch-22 situation,-without experience you can’t get a job and without a job you can’t get experience.

Impasse
因为他们都有一个意思:no way out. You are so dead.

注:Left and rigth 并不可以用来指左右为难,而是到处的意思,=high and low.

Horton Hears A WHO 里的几句英语

 By Vincent

This is the second time I watch this movie, a spring animation blockbuster adapted from Dr.Seuss’s Horton Hear’s A Who. Too bad I failed to find a proper English subtitle for this AVI file, as it was ripped and uploaded by AXXO a couple of days ago. Obviously, it’s impressive where the previous DR.Seuss’s adaptaion " The Cat In The Hat" has fallen short.

Anyway, I recommend everybody watch this funny anime.

1.Certainly appreciately your input

Ok, I will that under advisement.

She scared the shit out of him.

 2. Hey, Jojo, What’s shaking. what’s happening. What’s the world.

Jojo。
=what’s up?
=what have you been up to.
=what’s new

 3. No matter how tight this speck I get. The speck will never replace you.

4. Proceed this plan.

We are all very busy….Let’s bring this meeting to order.
以前学过的是call this meeting to order。

  5.You cross the line.

6.I can’t figth this feeling anymore.

Reporting A Stolen Car

By Vincent ( Previously posted on 19lou)

Kenji: Hello, my car was stolen and I want to report it.

Officer: Where was it when it was stolen?

Kenji: It was parked outside of my apartment building. I went outside this morning to drive to work, and it was gone.
What are you driving at?

Officer: Okay, you need to fill out this form. Put down the make and model of the vehicle, the year, and the color. You’ll also need the license plate number. Do you know the vehicle’s VIN number?

Make and model and year of a car
License plate number

VIN number:

Kenji: No, I don’t.

Officer: That’s okay. Just fill it out and we’ll launch an investigation.

Kenji: What do you think the chances are that I’ll recover my car?

Officer: That’s hard to say. If it was stolen by some kids who wanted to take a joyride, they’ll abandon it afterwards and you may get it back in one piece. If it was taken by professional car thieves, that’s a different story. They usually strip the cars of their parts and sell them to chop shops. You may not want your car back after it’s been stripped. My Name Is Earl

By Vincent

We’re not cut from the same cloth

Turd
造句:You nasty piece of turd.

We’re gonna eat in a while 我们待会儿就开动。

Cross her off the list

But we just clicked 和下面的hit it off差不多
I Hit it off with her=I fell in love with her at first sight(the second I laid my eyes on her)

比较:I don’t know what makes him tick
Relieve yoursel=take a leak

My ex is very clingy.

She treats me like doormat. Don’t be such a doormat!

Stand up for herself

You need to lighten up = 不要这么认真啦,你这是何苦呢,看开点啦。

Speak For Yourself

By Vincent

If you say “speak for yourself” when someone has said something, you mean that what they have said is only their opinion or applies only to them.(INFORMAL)

1.“We’re not blaming you,‘ Kate said.
“Speak for yourself
” Boris muttered

2. “MarkWe all think Vincent is a major badass, and we are planning to crucify him tomorrow morning”
“Speak for yourself
Chuck”

“We were all bored in that lecture.” “Speak for yourself
I like it”

South Park

By Vincent

1.I’m getting on first!
Oh, no! You’re not!

A:I will go to the movies with Bob!
B:No, you don’t.

2.The internet isn’t working!

3.Whoa!Settle down. Dude.
Whoa!

Whoa! You are speaking fast!

4.We’re full up.

The hotel is booked up或者the hotel is filled to capacity.

Numberous of people cramm/pack into Grandmather’s home(我随便翻翻)

Cram into, pack into 和flock into的差别或许你们可以尝试着自己去查查字典,或许会更有体会。

The factory is working at full capacity.

5.So they have to ration it out carefully.

His wife rations him to 10 cigarettes a day.

Read more

Why So Pissed Off

By Vincent

As usual, Young gave me a ride home in the unbelievably ’drivable‘ company car Jetta late tonight.

Last night, he called, asking me ‘what means ’pissed off”. FYI, he should’ve asked "what does ’pissed off’ mean".

Anyway, I told him that if you say ‘i’m pissed off’ , u mean you are very annoyed, irritated, and if you ask a person to ’piss off’, it’s like ”bugger off’, ‘fuck off’, ’ get lost’, stuf like that.   Well, Young has been such a curious kido all along. With his hands holding the wheel, he looked at me, asking" as piss means ‘niao niao’, why ‘pissed off’ means 我火大了?

‘ uh…I don’t know, perhaps it’s because your are most likely to get irritated if I piss on you. This is the reason I can think of now’, answered  Vincent.

Obviously, this guy was not convinced. I just could tell from his face.

He gets a kick out of my failure to answer his questions. He kept asking me and in the meantime, ran his imagionation wild, in an effort to figure that out.

‘Well, why dont you just visit my blog tomorrow. I will put it there later’.

Voila! This is the anwer you are seeking:

By Heather

I was rather pissed to find that there is not much evidence out there to substantiate or dismiss your excellent guess. We can be sure that the angry meaning of pissed off became popular among the Armed Forces in World War II, and entered into mainstream use during the post-war years. In 1946 it was defined as a new word in American Speech XXI: "This means roughly, fed-up, irritated, depressed." Some linguists and historians think the expression must have been well known during the war years, citing a story about General Eisenhower’s dog. The story goes that the dog (Felix) urinated on a map and the officers joked that the enemy was "pissed off." (Leonard Mosely, Marshall, 1982).

In the 1970s, pissed off became much more common in British English, and continued to gain popularity in the U.S. As its usefulness grew, several new variants of the expression sprouted. For the first time we find pissed (no "off"): "I’m pissed at people in the movement . . ." (It 9-23, 1971). This reduction of pissed off to pissed is primarily American; in British English pissed continues to be an adjective for drunkenness. During Read more

MUMA & THIRD PARTY SUMMER GIG IN HANGZHOU

By Vincent

Me and Foggy went to Muma and & Third Party’s summer gig in the Traveller Bar on July 28. Muma is easily the most badass Chinese rock band ever. Last yaer, Me and two friends of mine went to 4live bar in Shanghai for their live in celerbaton of their release of the new album ‘Velvet Road’. (I don’t know,  I tend to come up with intolerably long sentences like this. It’s a curse and I seriously cannot do nothing about it) it was so impressed back then. They are absolutely groovy.

When we got to there, it was totaly ‘people-mountain-people-sea’. Stylish hotties were everywhere. They are gainning popularity these years. Good for them, but bad for us: Their new album stinks like shithole:(.  I elbowed my way to a girl busy collecting money. She stamped our arms like we are two pieces of pork after we handed over RMB, then we stepped in, and there were 4 guys tuning the instruments. These guys would be the warm-up band for Muma, and they can suck a cock. Totally clueless how to rock.

The first song was my favourite: ‘I lost her’. Dudes! I can listen to this shit for four hours in a row. It’s the best of its kind. I got so excited listening to it just in front of the guy who composes it.

Enough talk. Let’s just see how they ruled that sunday afternoon.

RAD

Real Time With Bill Maher上听到嘉宾用了这个词,想来这个词在美国应该是被广泛使用的。

exciting or interesting

Have you guys seen Wendy’s new place? It’s so rad.

Father:Son, look what you old man just took.

Son (looking down to the toilet) : Wow…

Father: This is the biggest crap I’ve even taken.

Son: That’s totally radical.

Erudite

It started  when Walter  Heller,  a  witty,  erudite  professor  from  Minne-
sota  who  was  chairman  of the  Council  of Economic  Advisors,  told
President  Kennedy  that  a  tax  cut  would  stimulate  economic  growth.

“having or showing reat knowledge or learning" (博学的,有学问的)的意思。

originfrom latin eruditus, past participle of erudire" instruct, train". based on dudis"rude, untrained"). =to make not rude ,rude在古英语中是无知的,无文化的,未开化的意思,那么erudite博学的,饱学的,有学问的的意思就很好理解了。

"The Cunning Man" is an intricate and erudite work.

Sentences from books, newspapers, etc.

Accelerating violence and horror eventually hit maximum velocity and warp into nonsense, no matter how erudite the script.

Among themselves, ecclesiastics have become eminently sophisticated and erudite.

Gregarious, erudite and energetic, Brezzo could never be accused of thinking in small, ordinary ways.

He’s erudite, enormously warm and most of all, a golfer. Read more

Two and Half Men (1)

By Vincent

From one episode of Two and Half Men. Cannot recall which one.

 1. Slacker

Alan: You know what you call someone who just skates through life doing only the bare minimum?
Jack: Uncle charlie?
Alan: You call him a slacker.
Jack:Whatever

2She is a catch.

Catch
我笑了起来,对波兰人说:‘She is a good catch,uh?”

3.She is a cougar!
Cougar=puma
所幸,she-devil立刻给出了解释:cougar=an old woman who preys on young men…

4.What did I do to deserve that

By Vincent

Busboy

By Vincent  (转载请注明出处)

19楼上都笃在一口外语上问了个问题:He is a busboy什么意思?

from L. omnibus "for all," dat. pl. of omnis "all" (see omni-).

at some point, Vincent is an office boy.

Please take a close look at below analysis by Kenneth G. Wilson

The motor vehicle for carrying passengers is spelled bus; its plural is either buses or busses, both Standard. The verb bus, meaning “to transport by bus,” developed quite regularly through functional shift. It met some opposition at first, primarily because it was new, but the movement toward racial equality in education in the sixties brought it into widespread use, and it is now Standard: The board decided to bus the children to the suburban schools. Its participles are both spelled either way: bused, bussed; busing, bussing. The other noun, meaning “kiss,” is always spelled buss, and the plural and the third person singular of that verb are spelled busses. This word, both noun and verb, is Standard but perhaps now either arch or old-fashioned.

A bus boy or busboy assists the waiter or waitress in a restaurant; he clears dishes (he buses or busses them), and all of his duties come under the heading of busing or bussing. The origin of this Americanism is uncertain. It is almost certainly from a clipping of omnibus, but whether because busing involves pushing a cart (a bus) full of dirty dishes or clearing everything (food, dishes, silver, glassware, and crumbs—a regular omnibus of items) from the table is unknown. There is no bus girl, but some speakers are beginning to use bus person.
