 By Vincent

1. Oh, I Know! He swept me off my feet!
Sweep someone off his/her feet
Mary is madly in love with bill. He swept her off her feet.

2.My husband just pulled up.

3. I only hooked up with him a week ago.
Hook up with someone
******叫one night hook-up.

4.Easy pickings
Pickings

5. Stag
Go stag

6. …and he cans me
Can someone=give sack to/sack someone/dismiss someone.
Pink slip: a piece of paper giving notice of dismissal from employment; any dismissal from employment.
I got a pink slip today. I guess I had it coming.
I hope I don’t get a pink slip. I’ve got my mortgage to pay.
Pink slip can also be used as a verb.
If you make no headway at work, I’m going to have to pink slip you.
For security purposes, I’m going to
have to ask you to check in your mobile.

7. There you go.
我们在很多场合多次There you go。

8. It had very strict dress code.

9. If you didn’t stand me up in the airport in the first place.
Leave someone hanging

In the first place是一个很好的词组,意思是一开始,起先,先前,当初。 In the first place很多时候都用在抱怨的语气里,有点早至如今,何必当初的感觉。
比如Why didn’t you tell me about it in the first place?
You shouldn’t have cheated on me in the first place.

10. spotted in a massive display of P.D.A.
Public Display of Affection.
记得我当初还介绍过一个“No Display of Affection in Public” (不准在公共场合亲热)
Spoted

11. You said we were through.
We are so over. We are history. 或者I’m so over you. You are history.

12. So I, I , went a little overboard.
Go overboard

 By Vincent

1. A vicious serial killer is on the loose.
我们可以说加里森福特is on the loose, 还可以说是He’s on the run.
Scofield and his brother are still at large.

2.Take that shot. Take that shot!
Take the shot
She was totally pissed after a few shots.

3. I got suspended, and Monk got back on the payroll.
Got back on the payroll=was reinstated.
On the payroll of a company, you mean they are hired by them.
Payroll
Suspend
Suspend

4. The investigation was officially underway.
Underway
Xxx In process
比如考场外边可能会挂着silence! test in process; 工地外可能会挂着 no admittance!
ATM取钱,交易正在进行应该翻译成 ‘transaction in process’ 而不是 ‘transaction is being processed’ 的吧。

5. By all accounts, he was an exceptional child.
Exceptional
outstanding
比如,He is an exceptional student他可是个尖子生。

Working Late At The Office

By Vincent

An article previously posted  by me on 19lou.com a couple of months ago.  For audio of the dialogue, please go to www.eslpod.com.

I was so glad it was Friday afternoon. I’ve been thinking–TGIF–all day. I was on my way out of the office when I saw Nick sitting at his desk. Even though the office was nearly empty, he didn’t look like he was ready to leave. In fact, he looked like he was still swamped with work.

Linda: Hi, Nick. You’re here late.

Nick: Yeah, it looks like this may be an all-nighter. I just got a project dumped in my lap.

Linda:You’re kidding! On Friday afternoon? What happened?

Nick: Well, the person who wasput in charge ofthis project went on maternity leavethis week and the person who was supposed to take it overjustresigned.

Linda: I can’t believe that. When is the deadline?I hope you’re getting some extra help.

Nick: The project is due first thing Monday morning. And,
with the lay-offsrecently, I think I’m on my own on this one.

Linda: Why don’t youbring me up to speed ? Maybe I can help.

Nick: No, it’s Friday. You look like you’re about to head home. I can’t ask you to do that.

Linda: I don’t have any big plans for tonight. So, I’ll tell you what.I’m having some trouble finishing the budget

on my proposaland I know you’re a whiz at numbers. Why don’t I stay and help you with your project for the next few hours and you can give me a hand with my budget next week.

Nick: That’s really nice of you.It would be a big relief. I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed and I know you’ve done a project like this before. Okay, you’ve got a deal!

Linda: Good! Now, let’s see what we’ve got.

Contravene
I assume most of your guys have no clue what this word means, cause you don’t use it at your daily work, or you find it’s too much a “big word” for you to add to your current vocabulary building. To memorize it more efficiently, you are highly recommended to take a look at its “word origin”, ( only in case you cannot tell its origin without taking a close look).

Date: 1500-1600 Language: French Origin: contrevenir, from Late Latin contravenire, from Latin contra- ( CONTRA-) + venire ‘to come’

This explanation speaks to me a lot.
contra =contre=against
and
venire obviously means to come.
Anyone who has gained a bit understanding of Francais shall know VENIRE’s definition. I suppose now you’ve got a rough idea what it means. Seemingly it means “ to do something agasint something”

If you happen to have a Collins Robert French Dictionary, look “Contrevenir” up, it says contrevenir a = to contravene, which means the English word “contravene” was derived from French with a considerably small change.

Then what the hell is the meaning of “contravene”? “ to do something that is not allowed according to a law or rule”, says the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. Read more
